Lincoln Sunken Garden

Tuesday 7Apr20 Lincoln Sunken Gardens

Day 82

Got up around 8. After breakfast I decided to go check out the Sunken Gardens which was only a couple of miles away.  It was a nice garden but to early in year to be in bloom. There were a few daffodils in bloom. Adjacent to the Sunken Gardens was a Veterans Memorial Garden. It had all the branches of the military and even sub branches like the Special Forces.

I got on I-80 round noon but only drove for an hour or so. I stopped at a rest stop. There was a 20+ mile an hour head wind. Since I had no where to be I decided to kill some time there until the wind died down. There was a historical marker outside the restoom that talked about the Fort Kearny to Nebraska City Cutoff from the Oregon Trail. In the 1860s there was a lot of freight being transported to supply the forts and other settlements. At one point a Steam Wagon was built and brought to the cutoff to replace the horse, mule and oxen wagons. The wagon broke down after seven miles and had to be abandoned. It sat there rusting away for years until it was hauled off for scrape.

I got back on the road around 8 and drove until 9:30 I stopped at another rest stop for the night.
