Day 62
Woke up this morning at 7:30 to a party cloudy day. I had the usual breakfast. After cleaning up I secured everything and got on the road just before 9. I drove to the Swamp Boat Adventures location but they were closed due to the Coronavirus. It is a little alarming to me that the government has this much control over the private sector. I asked the guy there who was painting the deck of one of the swap boats if he'd heard about financial assistance for his loss of business. He said there was a stimulus package being discussed.
On the way there I passed a State park so I drove back there to check it out. I let the dogs out and while I was watching them a man named Pete came over and told me about how some sick person had recently killed a dozen or so cats there in the park. Apparently it was a common place for people to bring their unwanted cats. That would have been just as bad had there not Beena several people routinely feeding the stray cats. He said there was one cat still there with a injured leg that they had been trying to capture to get it some medical treatment. There was a pier that went a ways out into the swamp and I saw a lizard and turtle as I was walking out on it.
Pete, the man not my dog, told me of another State Park about 10 miles further done the road, so I loaded up and headed that way.
Fort Pike as it were was closed but I was able to walk around the back side and get in to take some photos. The fort was built after the War of 1812 to prevent any future foreign invasion.
After checking out the fort I decided to make a loop through
the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. I saw several abandoned boats I assume they were stranded in the last hurricane.
I then got back on I-10 and crossed into Mississippi. Just over the boarder I stopped in a real nice visitors center/reststop. They even had a dump station so I took advantage of that. They don't allow over night parking but they had pullouts with water at most of them just like a campground. I also filled up with water.
After the reststop I got on 607 which turned into 90. I drove to Laketown and then followed the coast eastward hoping to find a free beach. No luck the entire coast on Mississippi must be covered in million dollar homes. I stumbled on a Walmart and hopefully I will be able to stay here. I huge diesel pusher motorhome pulled up next to me so at least I'm in the high real estate area.
