Day 46

Well I didn't get run off last night. I woke up around 6 and tossed and turned until I finally got up at 8. I fed the dogs and cleaned up then went into WM without having breakfast. I needed to go to the bathroom in a hurry. After getting back to the RT I fixed the usual breakfast. After cleaning up I went for coffee at a McDonald's. After coffee I drove about 10 mile east on I-10 to the USS Orleck a Naval Destroyer made into a Museum. The ship was built in 1945. It was used in Korea and assisted in the Recovery of the Gemini IV spacecraft.

The museum actually closed on March 1st. The ship will be going to a dry dock for repairs. After that it will be relocated to Jacksonville FL. Even though it was closed I was able to go on board and check her out.

After checking out the ship a had lunch in the RT. I had a cucumber, onion, tomato and chicken breast salad. A Pabst Blue Ribbon beer as well. Things that most people don't think twice about often grab my attention. Today's simple rediscovery was how much moisture is in the air here in Louisiana.  Proven by the amount of moisture collected on the beer can. In Utah, typically there wouldn't be any. I remember as a kid drinking from an aluminum drinking glass and how water always collected on it.

After lunch I drove a couple of miles to the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu. It was located in an old school house and there was not a single sign anywhere on the building. Luckily a man noticed me looking around and informed me it was inside on the second floor. There were hundreds of amazing costumes. Some costing tens of thousands to make. The  krewes as they are called would come up with a theme then work a whole year to make the costumes. I learned that it originated from the Catholic Church. A big celebration of indulgence just prior to Lent. Lent is approximately 40 days before Easter. There is a special King Cake that celebrates the Wisemen finding baby Jesus. There is a plastic baby in the cake. The one who finds the baby has to bring a King Cake to the next celebration.

There was also an art gallery in the school building. The art was recreations of Van Gogh originals.

After the gallery I walked about a half mile to an historical area of buildings built around to turn of the century, or when Granny was born.

It is a little after 8 now and I am getting ready to drive about 15 minutes to a truckstop for the night.
