Saturday 21Mar20 First day of Spring
Day 65
I woke up around 5 to put Pete out and went back to bed until 9 (So bad) and had the usual breakfast. It rained pretty hard at one point during the night and it was cloudy all day today.
I spent most of the day adding old blog entries.
I check on line and find that National Seashore is partially open. Looking at the website the first photo I see is a couple kayaking. That makes me realize I should get a kayak now. I have been wanting and looking for one for at least six months. knowing I was ultimately going to get one last summer I bought a second hand pickup ladder rack and modified it to go on top of the RT. It is up there and ready.
I have a couple of things I have to consider in finding the right kayak. It has to be at least partially blue to match the RT. It has to be relatively light so I can manually lift it on top of the RT. The cockpit has to be at least a 20 inches wide to straddle the evaporative cooler.
While walking the dogs in the grass along the side of Walmart parking lot a lady walks by and ask me if I'm traveling. She was about 50 years old. She was walking back to her place that was close by. We have a nice conversation mostly about our travel adventures. She has a daughter who was at one time on a ski racing team and when I told her I skied she ask me why I wasn't back in Utah skiing. She had traveled quite a bit and said she slept in her car on many occasions.
While I was talking to her a guy comes up and joins in to our conversation. I had noticed him and his buddy earlier seating on the grass in the back of the parking lot. He was back packing and headed to Reading California to go to a wedding. His name was Max. He was very intelligent and informed. He said that meeting people and learning about them and from them is what he loved most about his nomadic lifestyle. He was a member of the Rainbow Society. I had heard of them but know little about what they are about. Max tells me a little but I will need to read some more before I join up. Their next International Gathering will be in 2022 somewhere in Colorado. That gives me a couple of years to figure it all out before I show up to the meeting.. I actually ran into their International Gathering in Big Piney Wyoming the first year I took Zack backpacking in Wind Rivers Range in Wyoming. That was in 2003. I always stop and eat lunch in Big Piney on the way home to Utah.
After talking to Max I took the dogs back to the RT. I got on line and found a Academy Sporting Goods store back in Biloxi.. It said they had the kayak I was looking for so off I went. I was disappointed to find out they had sold the last blue one earlier today. Darn!
When I came out of the sporting goods store I noticed a Walmart just across the street so I drove home! I watched a couple of movies and called it a day.
