Great lakes Museum

Tuesday 21May19

Woke up at 8. Went for a mile run. Had the usual breakfast then took a shower.

Drove about 15 minutes to the National Great Lakes Museum. I spent at least two and a half hours looking at all the exhibits. Wow so much information. The lakes themselves, for example Erie is the shallowest 210 feet and freezes over some winters. Superior is the deepest 1332 feet. All the Great Lakes combined hold 21% of the world's freshwater. And 84% of America's freshwater.

There have been sailing ships schooners, steam ships and diesel powered ships.

The lakes are prone to to have terrible storms particularly in autumn cause by cold dry air from Canada mixing with warm wet air from the Gulf of Mexico. The storms can have 75 mile an hour winds that result in waves as high as 30 feet. There have been thousands of ship wreck. The most famous was the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank on 10 November 1974.  I remember as a teenager listening to Gordon Lightfoot singing The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It always had a haunty sound to it. A very unique song.

Edmund Fitzgerald

After seeing the museum I went aboard the Colonel James M Schoonmaker. I have been on board a lot of navy ships but this is my first maritime ship tour.

There were 3 large cargo holds like the one below.
After I got off the boat I cooked dinner, Chicken and Dumplings and then took a short nap.

I then drove to Detroit where I stopped at a Walmart. I parked at the back of the store and let the dogs out to run free for some exercise. Wiggin scared up some kind of critter and Chase it into some Creek which was very nasty and came back to the RT smelling terrible so I had to give him a quick shower.
