Mammoth Cave

Thursday 9May19 Mammoth Cave

Woke up at 6:45 to a cloudy morning. I worked on the journal until Pete was ready to get up.

Ate the typical breakfast and drove to the visitor's center. Walked through the numerous displays and information panels until it was time for the 10 AM history tour.

We had a female tour guide with a very pleasant voice and she did a nice job. There was a school group which resulted in the overall group being at Max capacity.

After the tour I ate lunch in the RT and took a short nap.

Back on the road and stopped at Abraham Lincoln's birthplace.

There was a nice boardwalk leading to the monument that transversed some beautiful scenery.

Since I arrived a couple hours after it had closed I had the entire place to myself however I was not able to get inside the monument. The cabin that is inside the monument has been determined not to be the cabin he was actually born in so that made me feel less disappointed.

The place is called Sinking Spring.

I then got back on the road and drove to where he grew up. Knob Creek Farm.

This tavern was built to honor President Lincoln. It is now a museum. It is located on the site of the Lincoln Knob Creek farm.

The most important driver for establishing a farm was a source of good water. I walked the short distance to the creek and found it to be very picturesque however my phones battery gave out.

The Knob Creek Farm is on the Cumberland trail which is now scenic Hiway 31.

I drove onto Lexington and stopped for the night at a Walmart.
