Kentucky Horse Park

Friday 10May19 Kentucky Horse Park

Woke at 6 or 7  depending on what time zone I am actually in. Had the usual breakfast except no banana nut bread I'll have to get that later today. Called Expedia and then Enterprise car rental to resolve an issue with the car rental in Oklahoma City. They first told me that there was an additional hundred dollar charge, $15 a day because Zackary was under 25, however Zackary is actually 25. Next they told me it was just because there was a $15 a day  charge for an additional driver. I very adamantly informed them I was never told this. I confirm this with Zack. Ultimately it was elevated up the chain and I should get a email in 48 hours telling me that they approved a refund of the additional $100.

I then drove to the closest Costco in Lexington and filled up with fuel then drove to the Kentucky Horse Farm and spent the day there.

I paid $5 for parking and was told there was a $20 dollar entrance fee however I never saw any thing about a fee when I entered the visitor's center. I'm not saying that I looked real hard for one either.

There were some displays in barns about shoeing and making harnesses.

I wish Dad was with me to see it all. Especially the horse drawn farming equipment.

Then I went to the Breeds barn where there were many different breeds.

I attended a show where five different breeds were demonstrated.

My favorite was the Tennessee Walker. It was a small horse even for a Tennessee Walker and it was amazing how fast he could walk, keeping up with other horses that were trotting.

Next I went to the big barn where the draft horses were.

I actually got in a bit of trouble for taking this shot since the horse had blinders on and couldn't see me.

The far horse is Jace the largest horse on the grounds. 19.5 hands. I learned that one hand equals four inches the average size of a man's hand. I guess women don't get to measure horses. A horse is measure to the highest part of his back.

Next I watched some horse jumping There were at a least a half dozen courts where horses were jumping. I assume at different levels of training. Then I went to the Rolex Arena where it was being prepared for a show this weekend.

There were statues of three of the greatest thoroughbreds,  John Henry

I never knew Dad was named after a horse.

Secretariat

One of my favorites just because of the movie, and the greatest thoroughbred of all time, Man of War.

He had an amazing 28 foot stride. Wow.

After the Kentucky Horse Farm I drove to Williamstown Kentucky and stopped at a Walmart for the night. I bought some bratwurst for dinner, Yummy.
